Plantation trash goes out in blue city bags twice a week; recycling in clear bags once a week. Bulk is monthly. Waste Management: 954-974-7500.
Last checked Oct. 10, 2026. Facts on this page come from the City of Plantation’s solid waste page, bulk pickup page, recycling guidelines, yard waste page, hazardous waste page and Public Works FAQ.
Plantation runs a system no other Broward County city uses. Most homes put garbage out in official blue city bags, bought at the grocery store, and recycling in clear city bags. Waste Management collects both under contract with the city. Find your days on the city’s interactive waste schedule map.

The weekly schedule
From the city’s solid waste page:
- Garbage: twice a week.
- Recycling: once a week. Pickup starts at 7 a.m. and is normally finished by 7 p.m.
- Set out: everything at the curb before 7 a.m. on your collection day.
- Holidays: no service on Sundays or Christmas Day.
- Weight: a blue bag may not weigh more than 40 pounds.
How the blue bag system works
The city calls it Pay As You Throw. It has run for more than 40 years, the city says.
- Buy blue garbage bags and clear recycling bags at local stores, including Publix, Winn-Dixie and Walmart. The city’s page lists the stores, and both bags are also sold on Amazon with a convenience fee.
- The cost of the bags plus your monthly utility bill makes up the total cost of garbage, bulk and recycling service.
- Smaller, kitchen-size blue bags are sold at a lower price.
- Black bags are not collected, and a black bag left on the swale can bring a Code Enforcement notice.
- Missing bag ties? Public Works at 750 NW 91st Ave. hands them out.
Carts and bins instead of bags. Only three areas use the cart system: Hawks Landing, Melaleuca Isles and Plantation Acres. For a replacement or damaged cart, call Waste Management; for an additional cart, call Public Works.
Recycling
Plantation is single-stream: everything goes together in one clear recycling bag. From the recycling guidelines:
- Yes: clear and colored glass (not blue), food and drink cans, plastics numbered 1 through 5 and 7, newspapers, magazines, junk mail, office paper, cereal boxes, and paper and plastic cups.
- No: No. 6 plastic. Rinse containers and take the caps off; the city says a bag with caps left on counts as contaminated.
- Cardboard: flatten it and tie it in bundles no bigger than 18 by 24 inches.
- Wrap broken glass in newspaper before it goes in the bag.
Bulk pickup
Bulk is collected once a month, in a set week for your side of town. Put items out no earlier than the Saturday before your week and no later than 7 a.m. on your bulk day. The bulk map shows your exact date.
| Week | East of University Drive | West of University Drive |
|---|---|---|
| October | Oct. 5-10 | Oct. 12-17 |
| November | Nov. 2-7 | Nov. 9-14 |
| December | Dec. 7-12 (condominiums Dec. 9) | Dec. 14-19 (condominiums Dec. 16) |
The rules, from the bulk pickup page:
- Up to 15 cubic yards a pickup, about the size of a Volkswagen Beetle, the city says.
- Accepted: furniture, mattresses, appliances (Freon removed, with an approved sticker), water heaters, toilets, carpet tied in bundles up to 50 pounds, and tree trimmings cut to 6 feet.
- Not accepted: construction or remodeling debris, drywall, tile, concrete, pavers, fencing, shingles, tires, auto parts, paint, oil, chemicals, batteries, fluorescent bulbs, electronics and black bags.
- Keep piles away from mailboxes, trees, power poles, hydrants and storm drains, and separate appliances, yard waste and other items. A pile with banned items mixed in is treated as contaminated and left.
Yard waste and palm fronds
- Leaves, grass and small branches go in clear yard bags. On a garbage day, tie an unused blue bag to each clear bag; on bulk days, clear bags go out on their own.
- Branches must be tied in bundles no longer than 6 feet.
- Up to five palm fronds, each no longer than 6 feet, can go out with blue bags; with a cart, fronds must fit inside it.
- The city’s Horticultural Recycling Center at Public Works, 750 NW 91st Ave. off Cleary Boulevard, takes yard waste from residents for a fee by credit or debit card, and bags of leaves and grass clippings free. Free mulch is available around the clock there and at Seminole Park, 6601 SW 16th St.
Hazardous waste and electronics
Electronics, paint, chemicals and other household hazardous waste never go at the curb.
- Win-Waste Innovations, 4400 S. State Road 7 in Davie, takes yard waste, furniture, appliances, hazardous waste and electronics from Plantation residents with proof of residency on set Saturdays. The city lists Oct. 17, Nov. 21 and Dec. 19 for the rest of 2026, 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Call 954-581-6606 before you go.
- Plantation and Sunrise also hold free drive-thru hazardous waste collection days at their Public Works yards; dates are posted on the city’s hazardous waste page.
- Medications: tape them sealed and put them in your blue bag; never flush them. Sharps go in a sharps container.
What this means for you

- West of University Drive, bulk week is Oct. 12-17. Items can go out from the Saturday before your week, never earlier.
