Electricity in Plantation comes from Florida Power & Light (FPL), the city’s service providers page says. Outages, downed lines and power restoration all go to FPL, not the city. Water and sewer are different: the City of Plantation Utilities Department runs them. Natural gas comes from TECO Peoples Gas.

For storm-wide updates, sign up for the city’s Everbridge alerts on its notifications page.
Streetlights and traffic signals
- Streetlight out: if the pole is black or green decorative, call Plantation Public Works at 954-452-2535. For a concrete or wooden pole, report it to FPL through its streetlight page, the city’s Public Works FAQ says.
- Traffic signal dark: Florida law requires drivers to treat the intersection as a four-way stop.
Yard or driveway damaged by utility work
The city’s Who Do I Contact? page lists FPL at 1-800-468-8243 for damage by its contractors, along with AT&T (1-800-869-1615), Comcast (1-800-934-6489) and TECO (1-877-832-6747). Not sure which company did the work? Call Engineering at 954-797-2282.
Downed lines and storm safety
From Broward County’s hurricane guide:
- Treat every downed power line as if it is live. If a line is sparking or arcing, call 911.
- Walk carefully and stay out of standing water, which can hide downed lines.
- Do not go out after dark, when you may not see a line that is still energized.
- Do not drive unless it is an emergency; traffic lights may be out.
- Do not trim trees or plants growing on or near power lines yourself; only trained professionals should work near them. FPL’s tree guidelines are at FPL.com/Reliability.
Running a generator safely
From the federal government’s Ready.gov power outage guide:
- Use a generator only outdoors, and keep it and its fuel at least 20 feet from windows, doors and attached garages.
- Install carbon monoxide detectors with battery backup in central locations on every level of your home. Carbon monoxide has no smell.
- Keep the generator dry and protected from rain or flooding; touching a wet generator or anything plugged into it can cause a shock.
Before installing a permanent home generator, ask the city’s Department of Building Safety, 954-797-2765, about permits; see building permits. Portable generators of 10,000 running watts or less are exempt from Florida sales tax all year; see our hurricane prep guide.
Medical needs
If someone in your home depends on electric medical equipment, consider the county’s special needs shelter registry, 954-831-3902.
Complaints about service
If you cannot resolve a problem with FPL, the Florida Public Service Commission, which regulates investor-owned utilities, takes utility complaints online.
Starting or moving service
New residents start electric service with FPL and water service with the city’s Utilities Department; see our moving to Plantation guide.
