Broward's 2027-28 School Choice window runs Nov. 9 to Jan. 15. Four Plantation public schools run magnet programs; reassigned 6-12 students must reapply.
Broward County Public Schools opens School Choice applications for the 2027-28 school year at 8 a.m. Monday, Nov. 9. The window closes Friday, Jan. 15, 2027.
The district announced the dates Friday. Families use the window to apply for magnet programs, the Nova schools in Davie and reassignments to a school other than their zoned one.
Four Plantation public schools run magnet programs. One of them, Plantation 6-12, is new this year as a combined middle and high school, and that changes the rules for some of its students.

Enrollment is from the district’s Aug. 21 count and grades are from the Florida Department of Education’s 2026 school grades file. Our school pages carry the full detail and sources.
The programs, as each school lists them:
- Plantation 6-12: Aerospace Technologies, Applied Animation and Digital Design, E-Commerce and Entrepreneurship, Woodworking and Construction Trade, and Fashion Design, on its magnet programs page.
- South Plantation High: the Environmental Science and Everglades Restoration Magnet Program, on its magnet and innovative programs page.
- Mirror Lake Elementary: Aerospace and Engineering, E-Commerce and Entrepreneurship, and Innovative Arts, on its specialized programs page.
- Plantation Elementary: the whole school is a Sprouting STEM Museum Magnet, according to its magnet page. Children zoned for the school are in the program, and children from outside the zone apply through the district.
Zoned for the school? You may not need to apply
The district’s School Choice FAQ says a School Choice application is not necessary for a magnet program at your assigned, home boundary school. Contact that school instead to find out how to join.
So a family zoned for South Plantation High asks South Plantation about its Everglades program. A family zoned for Plantation High’s area who wants the South Plantation magnet applies in the window.
The rule for Plantation 6-12 families
The School Board merged Plantation Middle and Plantation High into one 6-12 school in January. That matters for students who attend on a reassignment instead of by zone.
The FAQ says reassigned students at schools with combined grade levels, such as K-8 or 6-12, “will need to submit applications to continue attending at the next level available at the school.” A reassigned eighth grader at Plantation 6-12 who wants to stay for high school has to apply in this window.
The same is true when any reassigned student moves from elementary to middle school or middle to high school. The FAQ says they “will NOT automatically matriculate into the next school.”
How the selection works
The FAQ says it does not matter when in the window a family applies, as long as the application and documents are in by the deadline.
- One application per category. A family can file one reassignment, one magnet and one Nova application for each child.
- Random selection. When a school has more applicants than seats, a computer draws the awards at random.
- Sibling priority. A brother or sister at the school gives priority under School Board Policy 6400. It does not guarantee a seat.
- Wait pool. Students not drawn go into a wait pool, and later draws fill seats as they open. The district does not promise more seats will open.
- Register or lose it. A family offered a seat must register at the school by the deadline, or the seat is forfeited.
Buses and documents
The district does not provide transportation for a reassignment. Magnet students get a bus only if they live more than 2 miles from the school and inside the program’s magnet transportation zone, the FAQ says.
Magnet programs with academic criteria ask for a recent report card and test scores in reading and math. Documents have to be uploaded before the deadline.
What it means for you
- Get the account ready now. Applications go through the Focus Parent Portal, and every child needs a district student number. The district’s School Choice Ready page walks through the steps.
- New to Broward schools? Take a government-issued photo ID and your child’s birth certificate to any district school to get a student number before the deadline.
- Check the dates page. The district’s Important Dates page carries the selection and notification dates.
- Questions: the School Choice office is at 754-321-2480 and schoolchoice@browardschools.com.
