History. The plan says rancher Dewey Hawkins grazed Texas longhorns here in the early 1950s. The city annexed the Westgate Shopping Center at Broward Boulevard and State Road 7 in 1955 and the strip north to Sunrise Boulevard in 1956, and the Sunshine State Parkway, now Florida’s Turnpike, opened in January 1957. Robert Goldman of Miami developed Breezeswept Park Estates from 1958, setting aside a six-acre school site, where Plantation Elementary opened in 1965, and seven acres of parks. The hospital now called Plantation General was completed in 1965.
