Plantation Gardens is where Plantation began: the first houses went up along East Acre Drive in the 1940s on one-acre lots, and the city held its first council meeting in a feed warehouse at the neighborhood’s southern edge in 1953. The city calls it the Plantation Gardens Historic District. Today it holds the city library, the Plantation Historical Museum, Plantation Woods park and Peters Elementary, with about 1,250 street addresses in Broward County’s address data, all in one ZIP code.

Where it is
The city’s Plantation Gardens Historic District Neighborhood Plan Report, a December 2003 draft, puts the district at about 620 acres west of Florida’s Turnpike, east of the East Holloway Canal, north of Broward Boulevard and south of Sunrise Boulevard. The Broward County Property Appraiser’s neighborhood layer draws Plantation Gardens a little larger, about 850 acres, between the Turnpike and the Plantation Preserve golf course; this page uses that outline. Fig Tree Lane, Palm Tree Road and East Acre Drive run through it. Park East is across the Turnpike to the east and Plantation Park across Broward Boulevard to the south.
All of the area’s street addresses are in ZIP code 33317.
History. The plan says Fred C. Peters, “the Father of Plantation,” hired Russell T. Pancoast in 1945 as the first city planner, and Chauncey Clark and his family began building the first houses along East Acre Drive on one-acre lots called “long acres,” with the back two-thirds meant for gardens and fruit trees. Two hurricanes and floods in 1947 covered the new village; by 1948 there were 12 homes and about 36 residents. Plantation was chartered on April 30, 1953, and held its first formal council meeting on May 11, 1953, in an old feed warehouse near East Acre Drive and Broward Boulevard. The library moved to its current building in 1968, and Deicke Auditorium was dedicated in May 1973. More in our history and landmarks guide.
